A month after I wrote about work life balance, my twin brothers went full throttle in the opposite direction.

As an older brother I can honestly say I am not surprised. It’s almost like I lit the fire myself.

I had just told them that working more hours isn’t always the answer. That there’s a cost to grinding nonstop.

I meant it, and I still do, but the situation has changed.

They aren’t making a rebellious decision, it’s them pushing forward in the right direction.

From trash bins to trusted with your car

They started small.

Going door to door around the neighborhood, leaving business cards on porches.

Their first idea was cleaning trash bins.

Wiping them down, making them look and smell decent all with a power washer and some twin-powered grit.

In a month’s span, they realized that trash bins were a weekly task and customers only reached out every now and then.

That’s when they decided to take the leap into the world of detailing.

Working in 100 degree weather during early mornings and late nights just to ensure their clients’ vehicles are looking perfect.

This not only reveals their tenacity but also the true meaning of hard work and how money is made.

They aren’t the only ones

Around the same time, my brother introduced me to his barber.

He’s also a high school student, and he has spent his time building his own barber business instead of just waiting until he’s “old enough” to take it seriously.

I’ve been a loyal client ever since.

Not out of obligation but because he is talented and I respect the hustle.

I’ve also heard that people at their high school have also done the same and jump starting their own business ideas like nail techs and other barbers.

What I’m actually seeing

I used to think the balance conversation and the hustle conversation were opposites.

Watching my brothers with their detailing business and their friend cutting hair, I don’t think that’s it anymore.

They’re building something that’s theirs.

All while still putting their best efforts towards school and sports. My brothers are in the high school football team and their friend the barber in the soccer team.

On their own hours, at their own pace, answering to their own name on the business.

That’s real ownership and there are no excuses.

This generation isn’t waiting for a diploma or a “real job” to give them permission to reach their dreams.

They’re starting now, with a business card and an Instagram following, then figuring the rest out as they go.
