Soccer player kicking ball with mud flying from the field

Here’s the Gist

  • Mexico lost at the World Cup, but their motto “¿Y Si Sí?” stuck with me. It means “What if it DOES work out?”
  • I lived in what if mode growing up. Trying soccer, even when I was not good at it, changed my life.
  • Keep going. You will not find out unless you try.

Sadly, Mexico’s national team lost today.

I was going to wait to post about this after they won the World Cup, but life had other plans. 😢

As a son to Mexican parents, I just had to show my support.

The Mexico team motivated everyone with a phrase that resonated with me and my own philosophy.

“¿Y Si Sí?”

It vaguely translates to “What if it DOES work out?”

Stuck in what if mode

Growing up, I lived in what if mode. What if I played soccer? What if I got into singing? What if I tried cooking?

As a teenager, I had to force myself out of this shell.

I tried singing. Wasn’t great.

I tried cooking. Also wasn’t a great cook.

I tried soccer. Also not good.

But I fell in love with it.

Training hard. Pushing myself to be better. Losing weight along the way.

It propelled me into a new version of myself.

Someone I would have never met if I did not give it a try.

What is not lost

They’re out of the World Cup now.

But what is not lost is my hope, my drive, and my resilience towards life’s challenges.

Now more than ever.

Because they truly gave it everything during that match.

Even if they did not win this game, they showed that we can overcome anything by believing in ourselves.

Just like high school me did back when I first stepped onto a field I wasn’t any good on yet.

We have to stop holding ourselves back. And believe in ourselves.

Whatever you’re tackling right now. A new goal at work or personally. Becoming a better person overall.

KEEP GOING.

Why?

Because “¿Y Si Sí?”

You won’t find out unless you try.

What is something you’ve been working towards? Did it work out?

Let me know in the comments!

Winning and losing are part of life. But I do know the feeling when our favourite team looses.
