What makes a good leader?

Leaders are usually picked out of the bunch by who stands out, who is able to take the reins, is able to find solutions to problems, and gets the team moving. One common misconception that I usually see is when people think leaders are supposed to be great at everything.

Leaders, in my experience, are people who make the most mistakes! But that’s exactly what gives them a step ahead of the rest.

MISTAKES

A good leader does not see mistakes as failures. A good leader sees mistakes as an opportunity to learn and improve.

As a manager and as a previous team member in employments throughout my life, I have seen both sides of the coin.

Nothing would discourage me more than getting yelled at and scolded for making a mistake. Instead of feeling like wanting to improve, it felt more like toxicity and wanting to leave for failing.

Now that I am in a leading role, I always try to remember how that felt. Instead of scolding, I try to figure out or help the team figure out why something happened.

As a leader myself, I can, without embarrassment, admit that I’ve made tons of mistakes. But those mistakes have really helped me aid my team when something doesn’t make sense.

I usually get that ahh yeah I went through that too. This is how you do this, or this is how you find that.

So if you want to be a good leader remember You DON’T have to be PERFECT. Learn from your mistakes and help others get past those obstacles you got past.

Your perspective on leadership is incredibly refreshing and insightful! I particularly appreciate how you emphasize that leaders are not supposed to be perfect, but rather individuals who learn from their mistakes. This approach humanizes the role of leadership and encourages a more empathetic and growth-oriented environment. Also, the way you’ve shared your personal experiences adds a great deal of authenticity to your post. Your transition from team member to manager serves as a relatable and inspiring example for anyone aspiring to be a leader. Keep up the fantastic work, and I’ll definitely check out Borderlinebanterbrews.com for more of your thoughts!

ooh I’d like to hear more of your other insights on leadership. It would be cool to hear more about it from you and Aaron on the podcast. What else does a leader do differently that makes them stand out? What drives you to become a leader?
